Remember What Your Skin Was Like Before Psoriasis

The following are some answers to frequent questions about the XTRAC excimer laser system for the treatment of Psoriasis:

Who should consider XTRAC?
Almost all patients with Psoriasis are candidates for XTRAC Laser Therapy. . . at some point.

If you have mild, moderate, and now with the recent release of the XTRAC Velocity™ Laser—even patients with severe Psoriasis should consider laser therapy, if you are unhappy with your current method of treatment.  You may have tried topical medications with disappointing results. You may be currently receiving conventional phototherapy, but notice resistant areas that simply do not seem to clear up, or you do not want to take the full amount of time required to complete 25, 30, or more phototherapy treatments.  You'll probably get relief much faster with XTRAC.

How does XTRAC work?
Using a carefully focused beam of laser light delivered through a sophisticated liquid light guide delivery system, the XTRAC system is designed to clear unsightly psoriatic skin plaques quickly and effectively. Because it concentrates light on active lesions, XTRAC allows your health care provider to deliver the high therapeutic doses necessary for rapid clearing without risk to healthy skin.

On the first visit, your physician may test your skin to determine your optimum starting dosage level or may opt to begin your treatment based upon a long-standing clinical protocol guide based upon skin type, plaque location, and plaque thickness. Then the XTRAC hand-piece is moved over the affected area, applying laser light at your determined dose. Depending on the area to be treated the procedure time typically only takes a few minutes.

How quickly will I see results?
Of course, results will vary. However, most patients begin to notice some improvement in their Psoriasis within 3 or 4 treatments.  Individuals with mild to moderate Psoriasis can often obtain clearance generally in 10 or less brief treatment sessions, however many factors affect clearance rates, such as plaque location, thickness, stability of overall Psoriasis condition, frequency of treatments, etc.

Is there any pain?
Most patients feel no pain or discomfort during the short XTRAC treatment sessions. Sometimes after some treatment sessions, you may experience a sun burn type response. While uncomfortable, this is often a good indicator that a therapeutic dose of laser energy was delivered. No anesthesia is necessary.

Not only is the XTRAC treatment free of pain, it has few of the drawbacks often associated with other Psoriasis treatments, such as premature skin aging, skin thinning, resistance to medication, or potentially harmful internal systemic effects.  And the XTRAC system can be used successfully on hard-to-treat areas of the body such as elbows, knees, and scalp.

How long will Psoriasis clearing last?
Each case is unique, but Psoriasis sufferers who have experienced XTRAC treatment have found that relief can last for extended periods of time. Remissions are expected to last at least as long as with conventional phototherapy, which is typically several months, but you will probably need fewer treatments per year to remain free of symptoms.

Is this Psoriasis treatment covered by health insurance?
Almost ALL major insurance companies provide coverage for XTRAC laser treatments, especially since:

  • XTRAC excimer laser has been in use since 2000
  • Laser specific CPT codes were published by the AMA in 2003, (96920, 96921, 96922; ©American Medical Association)
